[ti:New Ford Mustang Starts a Series of New Electric Vehicles]
[00:00.04]Ford is showing its first all-electric sports utility vehicle,
[00:06.88]or SUV - the Mustang Mach E, marking a major change in the U.S. car industry.
[00:18.68]Auto industry reporters got their first look at the new electric vehicle Sunday.
[00:25.67]The new Mustang can travel between 370 to 480 kilometers before needing an electrical charge.
[00:37.80]Experts say the Mustang Mach E marks the start of an increase
[00:44.00]in electric vehicles offered by top U.S. carmakers.
[00:50.60]There are 18 electric vehicle models for sale in the U.S.
[00:56.31]The research group IHS Markit expects that number to grow to 80 by 2022.
[01:06.92]New vehicles will include pickup trucks and SUVs that are popular with American buyers.
[01:16.24]Last year, electric vehicles made up only 1.5 percent of new vehicle sales worldwide.
[01:26.16]Auto Industry research company LMC Automotive predicts that will rise to 2.2 percent this year.
[01:36.36]In the U.S., electric vehicles were only 1.2 percent of sales in 2018.
[01:44.32]It is expected to be about the same this year.
[01:49.92]Automakers, however, see room for growth.
[01:53.40]They note that electric vehicles are getting 250 miles or more on a single charge.
[02:00.58]That means a buyer no longer needs to worry about running out of power during a day's usual drive.
[02:10.44]Because of the added models and increased power, LMC predicts
[02:16.03]that they will make up 17 percent of worldwide sales and 7 percent of U.S. sales in 2030.
[02:26.04]The first-generation of electric vehicles were simply existing models that were adapted
[02:32.26]to electricity to meet government fuel economy rules.
[02:37.32]They did not sell well largely because they could not travel more than 100 miles between charges.
[02:45.32]But now, many can go farther than the average one-day driving distance.
[02:52.76]"Seeing 250 miles as a real thing has been kind of a game changer in the electric car market," said Jake Fisher.
[03:03.13]He is director of auto testing for Consumer Reports.
[03:08.88]"There haven't been a lot of choices for (an electric) vehicle that really could take the place of a (gas) vehicle."
[03:18.92]Stephanie Brinley is an auto expert for IHS Markit.
[03:23.37]She said electric vehicle choices may expand before demand, but people will soon begin to buy them.
[03:33.80]"The increased number of models with an electric drivetrain
[03:38.16]will contribute to an increase in sales in the U.S.," she said.
[03:43.40]"However, there is likely to be a period where the number of (choices) will increase
[03:49.14]faster than demand and sales for each will be...low," she said.
[03:56.04]Many electrics coming in the next few years are from luxury carmakers,
[04:01.85]such as Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Aston Martin.
[04:07.68]But carmakers like Ford, Chevrolet and Toyota are also creating new electric cars,
[04:15.00]reports Edmunds.com auto website.
[04:20.72]Ford and General Motors have announced plans for all-electric pickup trucks
[04:25.96]that will compete against gas trucks that are the top sellers in the U.S.
[04:31.76]For Ford, executives realized in 2017 that they had to offer something special
[04:39.95]for the first of a new generation of electric vehicles.
[04:44.44]Last year, the company said it would make a six battery electric vehicle by 2022.
[04:52.98]To sell them, Ford decided to go to the company's strengths:
[04:58.24]pickup trucks and the high-performance Mustang.
[05:03.96]"There are going to be plenty of (battery electric) SUVs on the market.
[05:10.12]Some will have big batteries and double motors and be pretty fast.
[05:15.08]Some will look really good," said Jason Castriota.
[05:20.32]He is the company's marketing director for electric vehicles.
[05:25.26]He believes the Mustang is special.
[05:28.40]"Mustang is power," he said.
[05:32.48]The five-passenger Mach E looks like a traditional Mustang.
[05:37.08]Engineers say the least costly model will be able to travel about 370 kilometers on one charge.
[05:46.70]The most costly model will be able to travel 483 kilometers.
